ABS vs. Wood: What Should Your Custom Keyboard Feel Like?
Two Patreon keyboard concepts show how the same brand can feel bold and precise in ABS, or warm, tactile and personal in wood.

Same Brand, Two Very Different Feelings
Two Patreon keyboard concepts show how the same brand identity can feel precise and graphic in ABS, or tactile and commemorative in wood.
Custom keyboard conversations often begin with colour, keycaps and logo placement. Those elements matter, but they sit on top of a more fundamental decision: the material surrounding the keyboard.
An ABS case and a wooden case can carry the same brand colours, layout and graphic system while creating noticeably different impressions. One feels precise, controlled and easy to repeat. The other introduces natural variation, visible grain and the possibility of permanent engraving. That does not make one material universally better. It means they solve different branding and programme requirements.
We explored this contrast through two keyboard concepts built around Patreon's identity. The ABS direction used a dark case and bold red accents. The wooden direction paired the same brand with walnut, softer contrast and an engraved surface.
The useful question was not, "Which keyboard wins?" It was:
What should this keyboard communicate before anyone even starts typing?
One Brand, Two Material Languages
Material is not simply another finish applied at the end of a design. It influences how a product looks, feels, travels, repeats across a large order and ages over time.
Bang & Olufsen describes its own approach in "Craft Matters" as using the right material in the right place, selecting materials for function, longevity, comfort and appearance rather than appearance alone. It also emphasizes that material and engineering work together rather than separately.
That principle applies to a custom keyboard programme as well. Brand expression is important, but the material still has to make sense for the recipient, quantity, budget and intended use. For the Patreon concepts, both directions remained recognizable. What changed was the material language.
ABS: Consistency Is the Feature
ABS, or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, is a thermoplastic widely used for durable product housings. In a keyboard case, it supports clean forms, controlled colour and repeatable production.
Wooting's own case-material documentation describes ABS as a practical case material capable of retaining strength and durability while supporting different colours and finishes.
For a branded keyboard programme, the practical advantages are straightforward.
A More Controlled Visual System
An ABS case provides a consistent base for bold keycap colours and graphic accents. That made it well suited to the black-and-red Patreon direction, where sharp contrast did most of the visual work. Across a larger order, the overall appearance can remain highly uniform, which is useful when every recipient should receive the same recognizable brand system.
Easier to Position Across a Broad Programme
ABS keyboards are generally lighter and easier to deploy across employee programmes, event campaigns and community gifting. They can feel modern and intentional without requiring every unit to be treated as a limited-edition object.

ABS is therefore a strong option when the priorities are:
- Visual consistency across the order
- Bold or high-contrast brand colours
- Easier distribution at larger quantities
- A modern desk-tool aesthetic
- A practical balance between customization and budget
Its strength is not that it imitates a luxury material. Its strength is that it delivers a controlled, adaptable platform for the brand.
Wood: Variation Is the Feature
Wood changes the relationship between the product and its surface. Grain, tone and texture become visible parts of the design rather than a perfectly uniform background. Two wooden cases made from the same species will not look completely identical. In mass production, that variation would be a defect. In a wooden product, it is part of the appeal.
Natural Texture Creates a Different Presence
The walnut Patreon direction felt warmer and more tactile than the ABS version. The material introduced an object-like quality associated with furniture, crafted desk accessories and commemorative pieces.

Grovemade's material-led product stories use a similar approach: rather than describing wood only as decoration, pieces like "Making the Desk" show how machining, assembly, grain and finishing become part of the finished experience.
Engraving Adds a Permanent Personal Layer
The rear surface of a wooden keyboard can carry an engraved company mark, employee name, date or short message. Unlike a card placed inside the box, the message remains physically attached to the product. That makes wood especially relevant for smaller programmes where individual recognition is part of the brief.

Wood is worth considering when the priorities are:
- Executive, VIP or milestone gifting
- Individual names or commemorative engraving
- A tactile, crafted presentation
- Smaller or more selective programmes
- A material that is allowed to vary naturally
Wood is not automatically the premium answer. The quality depends on the species, construction, machining, treatment and finishing. It may also require more care, and natural variation should be approved as part of the visual expectation.
The Sound Question Is More Complicated Than "Plastic vs. Wood"
Case material can influence resonance, but it does not determine the keyboard's sound by itself. Switches, keycaps, plate material, mounting structure, internal space, foam and assembly tolerances all contribute to the final result.
Razer's own Huntsman Signature Edition material story separates chassis material from its purpose-built acoustic architecture, showing that sound is produced by the complete internal system rather than one exterior material.
A wooden case may be perceived as warmer or less sharp, while an ABS case may feel lighter or more resonant. Those descriptions should be treated as tendencies, not guarantees. If sound and typing feel are important to a company programme, the reliable approach is to approve a physical sample using the exact case, switches, keycaps and internal construction intended for production.

ABS vs. Wood at a Glance

This comparison is a planning guide, not a quality ranking. A well-designed ABS keyboard can feel more appropriate than a poorly specified wooden one, and a wooden keyboard can communicate something an ABS case cannot.
Choose the Material by the Job It Needs to Do
Before selecting either direction, define the role of the keyboard inside the programme.
Choose ABS When Reach and Consistency Matter
If the keyboard is intended for a larger employee group, event audience or community campaign, ABS provides a controlled platform that can carry bold brand elements while remaining practical to reproduce and distribute.
Choose Wood When Recognition Is the Main Story
If the keyboard marks a leadership gift, anniversary, creator partnership or individual achievement, wood and engraving can give the object a more commemorative role.
Use Both When the Programme Has Clear Tiers
A company can use ABS for a wider team programme and reserve wood for speakers, award recipients, long-service milestones or selected partners. This works when the distinction reflects the purpose of each gift and is communicated thoughtfully.
The decision should not simply be "standard versus premium." It should explain why each group is receiving that particular material.
The Patreon Takeaway: Brand Identity Is More Than Colour
The two Patreon concepts shared the same identity, yet they did not communicate the same message. The ABS direction made the brand feel graphic, energetic and repeatable. The wooden direction made it feel tactile, individual and commemorative. Neither interpretation cancelled out the other because the recognizable brand elements remained intact.
That is the value of comparing materials before production. It allows a company to choose not only how its logo will appear, but what kind of object the logo will live on.
The right material is not the one that looks most expensive. It is the one that best supports the purpose, audience and scale of the programme.
Compare Custom Keyboard Materials Before Production
GoblinTechKeys develops custom ABS and wooden keyboards for employee programmes, client gifting, events and recognition initiatives. Projects can include custom keycaps, case branding, engraving, packaging and low-volume production starting from 20 units.
If you are comparing material directions, we can prepare visual concepts to show how the same brand would translate across different keyboard formats before production begins.
