The Corporate Award That Doesn't End Up on a Shelf
Why Confluent gave its award winners personalised keyboards instead of plaques.

Corporate awards have a problem. Plaques get tucked away, trophies collect dust and crystal paperweights end up in a cabinet after the first office move. The thought behind them is real, but the objects rarely survive daily life.
When Confluent wanted to recognise its top clients at its 2025 Data Streaming Awards, it chose something the winners would actually use: a custom mechanical keyboard for each winner, personalised with the winner's company name.
A keyboard that reads as the award
The brief was clear. Each keyboard had to feel like a proper award, not a piece of swag with a logo on it, and it had to reflect both Confluent and the individual winner.
So the keyboard itself became the canvas. Each winner's company name was spelled out in large, bold legends across the alpha keys, letter by letter. The colourway used a deep navy base with a gradient from warm amber through coral to red, which gave the whole set a premium, consistent look.
Confluent's own branding stayed in the background: one branded key and a credit line on the spacebar reading "Presented by Confluent". Enough to tell the story, without taking the spotlight from the winner.
Branded versus personalised
A gift that carries your brand says "we wanted to give you something". A gift that carries the recipient's name says "we made this for you". That shift is what turns a corporate gift into something people keep.
Winners such as Uber and LinkedIn received keyboards with their own company name as the central design, not as a small engraved line at the bottom. Every time someone at those companies sits down at that desk, they see it.
How the order was produced
- Six unique designs in one production run, all sharing the same colourway and layout
- One extra blank unit so Confluent could test framing and mounting before the ceremony
- About two weeks of production from design sign-off, with express international shipping
- No extra cost per design: when every keyboard is built to a custom specification anyway, personalising each one does not add a premium
Who this format works for
- Industry awards: category winners at conferences, summits and community programs
- Client appreciation: your most important accounts, each with their own logo or message
- Partner milestones: a first anniversary, an integration launch or a contract renewal
- Internal recognition: employee of the year, top performers and long-service awards
Why a keyboard outlasts a trophy
It gets used. A plaque earns a moment of attention and then a wall. A keyboard sits in front of the winner for hours every working day, shows up on video calls and gets noticed by everyone who stops by the desk. For the company presenting the award, that is ongoing visibility no trophy can match.
